The Caretakers (2014)
Big Biting Pig Productions
Director: Steve Hudgins
Nominated for a Rondo Award for Best Independent Film for 2014, The Caretakers is not your typical vampire film. While most follow the vampire or the person charged with the task of slaying them, director Steve Hudgins shows us the story of classic vampires from the perspective of the people that take care them. Serving as their assistants, these caretakers gather “food” and complete other tasks for their masters.
In this film, we follow an aging caretaker, Jack, as he trains two new apprentices. These new apprentices are a father and daughter that have been rescued by the powerful vampire. As Jack trains his new squires, he also has to track down a rogue half breed vampire.
Taking a huge note from Hammer , The Caretakers is a character driven vampire film that focuses more on plot and details than gore and violence. With this being Big Biting Pig Productions eighth film, these filmmakers are displaying more talent with each film. The Caretakers uses beautiful colors and images that showcase a growing maturity to their line of films. Even though this is a heavily character driven film, there is still plenty of blood and gore that you would come to expect in a vampire film. This is a micro-budget film but they make great use of their financial constraints.
The acting is above average for this type of film. There are some fresh new faces that do a decent job and hold their own, but the most memorable performances come from veteran actors Bill Johnson who played “ Leatherface ” in Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 as “ Mr. Lyons ” and Joe Estevez , best known as Martin Sheen’s brother and veteran of over 200 feature films, including Apocalypse Now & Soul Taker as “Parker”.
The Caretakers is a fresh and exciting new spin on vampire fiction. Big Biting Pig Productions continues to add to their prolific catalog of micro-budget horror films that sets the bar for independent cinema. The Caretakers is easily the best vampire film I have seen since The Hamiltons . Steve Hudgins does a commendable job of weaving a complex story into an entertaining tale that is original enough to stand on its own while still lending acknowledgement to the classics.
