El Gigante
Luchagore Productions
Directors: Gigi Saul Guerrero, Luke Bramley
After promising to return to his wife and daughter, Armando ( Edwin Perez ) crosses the US/Mexico border in search of a better life for his family. Shortly after crossing the border, Armando is confronted by a man with a vehicle. After regaining consciousness, Armando finds himself in a hellish wrestling ring with a lucha libre mask sewn to his body. The only way for Armando to survive is to fight the massive villain known as Gigante, a hulking wrestler with a title belt made of human flesh.
El Gigante is a short film based on the first chapter of Shane McKenzie’s novel Muerte Con Carne (read the review here) , a horror novel about a Texas Chainsaw Massacre/Ed Gein family with a lucha libre twist. It is a brutal story with an appreciation for grindhouse films. Only the first chapter of this book is converted into the 13 minute short film as the chapter is a self-contained story that establishes the family and world perfectly.
Having the original author write the short film gives it a huge advantage. As the story is expanded and has additional characters, the balance is perfect and fits with the original story as if they were already there. Gigi Saul Guerrero and Luke Bramley handle the material masterfully. The set and costume designs are extraordinary, especially when you factor in the budget and location constraints. This film looks exactly how everything is described in the novel. The grime and dirt cake everything and everyone and the color palettes used are gorgeous.
Gigante is a nightmarish villain that won’t soon be forgotten. This massive character is an unrelenting force of destruction. The design of his mask and belt are top notch and add to the intensity of the character. Never resting on just intimidation, Gigante gets guts deep in this film.
El Gigante is a truly outstanding film and it is quite unfortunate that it ends. The conclusion is a natural fit with a fun wrap that plays during the credits. Everything about this film will have you begging for more.
Luckily, there may be more to come of Gigante and his cannibal family. Gigante was a chosen project for FRONTIERES FILM MARKET at FANTASIA FILM FESTIVAL. Luchagore Productions will pitch the project in July 2015 in front of a large audience while Shane McKenzie is working on the full length feature script. With any luck, the full length version of El Gigante will start production soon. In the meantime, watch the trailer below and keep your eyes peeled for this short film and others from Luchagore .
